I started building augmented reality applications in 2012 — years before ARKit, ARCore, or the word "spatial computing" existed. My first AR project used Vuforia image targets on Android. Over the next 13 years I worked with SDKs that no longer exist, built experiences for clients across India and the UAE, and watched the entire industry transform multiple times. This is the honest, technical account of how AR actually evolved — not the marketing version.

The AR Landscape in 2012 — Before the Frameworks

When I built my first AR application in 2012, there was no unified framework, no ARKit, no ARCore. AR development meant picking one of a handful of commercial SDKs, reading sparse documentation, and figuring out the rest yourself. The community was small, the tools were inconsistent, and getting something to work reliably on an Android device felt like a genuine achievement.

My first real AR project was for a financial services client in the UAE — an image recognition application built with Vuforia. The concept was straightforward: point your phone camera at a printed image, and digital content appears overlaid on top of it. In 2012, showing a client that for the first time was genuinely impressive. The technology felt like magic — even when it took three days to get the tracking stable enough to demo.

In 2012, AR development meant dealing with inconsistent camera APIs across Android devices, manual calibration of image targets, and almost no Stack Overflow answers when things went wrong. You emailed SDK vendors directly and waited days for responses. The tools were powerful but unpolished — which made every working demo feel like a real technical achievement.

The SDKs That Shaped Early AR

Before Apple and Google built AR into their operating systems, the entire AR ecosystem ran on third-party SDKs. Each had different strengths, different pricing models, and very different levels of reliability. As a developer working across this period, I used most of them in real client projects.

Zigfu brought Microsoft Kinect skeleton tracking to web and Unity applications. SDKs like Visage Technologies and Zigfu brought face tracking and skeleton tracking into AR development. Getting Visage Technologies running in Unity in 2014 required direct communication with their development team — documentation alone was not enough.

Apple Buys the Best AR SDK and Kills It
Apple's acquisition of Metaio in 2015 was one of the most significant moments in AR history — and almost nobody noticed at the time. Overnight, one of the most capable AR SDKs simply stopped being available. Developers who had built products on Metaio had to migrate. Two years later, ARKit launched with capabilities that bore a striking resemblance to what Metaio had been doing.

2016 — Pokémon GO Changes Everything
AR Reaches 500 Million People
Pokémon GO launched in July 2016 and within weeks had more daily active users than Twitter. For the first time, AR was not a marketing gimmick or an enterprise tool — it was something hundreds of millions of ordinary people were doing every day. The game proved that AR could drive genuine mass engagement, and it sent every major technology company scrambling to build AR strategies.

2017 — ARKit and ARCore Launch
AR Becomes Part of the OS
Apple launched ARKit at WWDC 2017 and Google followed with ARCore. For the first time, developers had reliable, well-supported AR frameworks built into the mobile operating systems themselves. The fragmented SDK ecosystem — Vuforia, Metaio, Wikitude, Kudan, XZImg — began to consolidate. Third-party SDKs either found niches or disappeared.

2018–2019 — Social AR Explodes
Snapchat and Instagram Make AR Mainstream
Snapchat Lens Studio and Instagram Spark AR brought AR creation to non-developers. Suddenly anyone could publish an AR filter — face effects, virtual objects in the room, life-size characters beside you. The "celebrity standing next to you" AR trend peaked in this period. Brands and marketers discovered AR as a content format. The technology that developers had been building since 2012 reached ordinary consumers through social media.

2023–2024 — Spatial Computing Arrives
Apple Vision Pro Reframes the Category
Apple's Vision Pro launch in 2024 brought the term "spatial computing" into mainstream conversation. The focus shifted from smartphone AR to wearable mixed reality. Meanwhile, enterprise AR was maturing — I was building VR training simulators for industrial clients, showcased at GITEX Dubai 2024 and ADIPEC Abu Dhabi 2025. The industry had grown from image targets on Android phones to standalone immersive training platforms.

Real-Time AI Inside Immersive Experiences
In 2026, the boundary between AR and AI is dissolving. Real-time AI scene understanding, AI-generated 3D content, AI avatars that respond to speech — these capabilities are being integrated directly into AR platforms. The foundation built by developers working with Vuforia image targets in 2012 now supports experiences that would have seemed like science fiction then.

The Consumer AR Moments That Changed Everything

The "Character Standing Next to You" Trend

One of the most viral AR concepts of the late 2010s was the life-size character experience — placing a realistic 3D figure into your environment so you could photograph or video yourself standing beside it. Virtual versions of celebrities, movie characters, animated mascots, and even political figures appeared in millions of social media posts. The technology behind it was relatively straightforward — plane detection, a rigged 3D model, and an anchor point — but the experience felt genuinely remarkable to people seeing it for the first time.

AR in Marketing — Before It Was Standard

Between 2013 and 2017, forward-thinking brands used AR in ways that felt cutting-edge precisely because so few companies were doing it. Scannable packaging that revealed product information. Print advertisements that came alive when viewed through a camera. Virtual try-on experiences for furniture and fashion. These campaigns generated enormous press coverage partly because the bar for novelty was so low — AR in a marketing context was genuinely unusual. Today it is expected.

Pokémon GO's Lasting Impact

It would be difficult to overstate what Pokémon GO did for AR as a category. In the summer of 2016, the game demonstrated to every major technology company, every brand, and every investor that AR could drive mass consumer behaviour at global scale. The AR features of the game were relatively simple — placing a 2D Pokémon sprite over the camera view — but the engagement was profound. Location-based AR, the concept of the physical world as a game board, and the idea of AR as a social activity all got their mainstream validation from Pokémon GO.

What Early AR Development Was Actually Like

Reading about AR history from a distance, it can seem like a clean progression from one technology to the next. The reality of building AR applications between 2012 and 2017 was considerably messier.

  • Device fragmentation was brutal — Android devices had wildly different camera implementations, processor capabilities, and GPU drivers. An AR experience that worked perfectly on one device would fail completely on another. Testing required physical access to multiple handsets.
  • Documentation was sparse — for many SDKs, the only reliable source of information was emailing the vendor directly. I have email threads from 2014 with Visage Technologies support working through Unity build pipeline issues that took days to resolve.
  • Performance was a constant battle — running computer vision algorithms on a mobile CPU in 2012 was genuinely demanding. Tracking quality and frame rate were in constant tension. Every optimisation decision had to be weighed against its impact on tracking stability.
  • Client expectations were misaligned — clients who had seen polished AR demos expected perfection in real-world lighting conditions. Explaining why the tracking degraded under fluorescent office lighting or in direct sunlight was a regular challenge.
