Snapchat did not invent face tracking. Developers had been using professional SDKs like Visage Technologies to track facial landmarks since at least 2012. The Dog Filter — Why That Specific Lens Changed Everything

Of all the Snapchat Lenses ever created, the dog ears and nose filter from 2016 had an outsized cultural impact that is worth examining specifically. It was not technically the most sophisticated lens — the face tracking was relatively simple and the 3D assets were not particularly detailed. But it had three qualities that made it unstoppable.
